Interuniversity Chair in Law and the Human Genome

The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is a teaching and research institution officially founded in 1985. The university employs over 7.000 people throughout 31 faculties and schools.

The Chair in Law and the Human Genome, created in 1993, develops a rigorous and cross disciplinary analysis of the legal implications of the advances in biotechnology. In the last years, the Chair has participated in a lot of national and international research projects, organized several congresses, workshops and conferences and published a large amount of papers and books on these topics. A huge amount of them are directly related to data protection and privacy issues.

The Chair produced the Report “Biostudy. Study on Bio-preparedness measures across the European Union - Final Report”, directly related to the Tender JLS/2008/ F1/005, “A study on the evaluation of legislation, regulations, standards and other instruments of regulation and their practical implementation covering the area of biological preparedness”, which was won by the Chair together with Mainstrat. This Report is directly related to preparation against CBRNE attacks in the EU. 

Activities in EDEN:

The Interuniversity Chair in Law and the Human Genome leads work package number 82, "Analysis of Legal and Policy Framework". It also takes part in work packages 81 and 84.

As teh leader of WP82, it is responsible for the following tasks:

-     Preparing a Legal and Policy Framework Report,

-     Developing a Data Protection and Privacy Issues Report,

-     Organizing a workshop related to these issues.
