Fraunhofer (FhG ICT)

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas. In short, we forge the future.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology, ICT is the unique German applied research and development facility on energetic materials and systems covering the whole range from synthesis, characterization, as well as formulation and processing of high explosives, gun- , rocket propellants and gas generators. Similar to Fraunhofer EMI and Fraunhofer INT, Fraunhofer ICT is member of the Fraunhofer Alliance VVS. ICT is participating to the Future Security Network BW which is lead by EMI. Furthermore ICT is periodically organizing special National as well as NATO Workshops regarding the detection of explosives. Since 2009 ICT is member of the EU commission financed NDE network, which is enhancing the detection of explosives detection technologies to secure EU Citizens Security. Therefore ICT is a national competence center on explosives detection, synthesis and processing of energetic materials including relevant homemade explosives.

The Fraunhofer ICT has a broad experience in developing explosives-related analytical methods and detection techniques as well as methods detecting explosives precursors and toxic industrial chemicals, TICs. Examples are the development and assessment of suitable detection techniques regarding the detection of mines, the benign disposal of explosive formulations / munitions and / or environmental hazards as well as the development and assessment of newly security relevant explosives detection technologies and reference measures. Examples of EU and German BMBF-financed projects are OFDEX, IRLDEX, EXAKT, EMPHASIS, DECOTESSC1, NDE, XP-DITE and others. Since 2008 ICT is an accredited / approved testing facility working in conjunction with the German Federal Police regarding e.g. testing and evaluation of liquid explosives detection equipments.

Activities in EDEN:

- ICT works in WP 32 on extensive inventory (catalogue) of equipments, methods etc. for the detection and identification of TICs as single substances as well as in case of mixtures

- Catalogue of suitable detection equipments / commercial sensors including description of relevant characteristics such as measurable components, detection limits, price and size, special characteristics of measurement capabilities (e.g. used for point detection or monitoring; mobile, stationary or handheld equipment) and suppliers specifications including info about typical usage (e.g. battery driven, allowed range of temperature, humidity etc.)

- Assessment of detector / sensor capabilities against scenario-specific criteria

- Catalogue of suitable, referenced or recommended detection methods / procedures for the measurement of single TICs or multi mixtures

- Review of ongoing sensor development work / scientific development activities especially on EU level
